Xerox Corp.XRX -0.65% is moving toward rapid prototyping of services in its innovation group, according to chief technology officer Sophie Vandebroek.
As the company has transitioned to a focus on back office services, its research and development labs must innovate in that area, too. Over the past few years, the copy machine pioneer has refocused itself on document management, bill processing and IT outsourcing services. Innovation may be needed on the services side to offsetfalling sales of printers and copiers in the most recent quarter.

Ms. Vandebroek has taken a page from a software development method known as Agile, which focuses on smaller projects and quick iteration to get to a desired goal. She’s applied the notion to service innovation.
Instead of creating a perfect solution to show the client, Xerox instead works directly with the client to create a rough prototype. “Through quick feedback and multiple iterations, we can get to an implementation that works,” Ms. Vandebroek, who is also president of the Xerox Innovation Group, told CIO Journal.
